The original reference image is from a photograph found in a magazine, there was an immediate draw for me. The sense of a masked face, which isn’t masked at all, simply obscured by darkness, perhaps soot and ashes from burnt woods.

I contacted the photographer, Piers Calvert, to ask if I could create a work with his image as the basis.  He very graciously agreed.  

The painting was shortlisted for The Columbia Threadneedle Prize. THESE DARK WOODS | NURTURER – 2016 Oil on linen 30cm x 40cm Oil on linen.
